Abstract

The purpose of this review was to compare different housing systems for hor-ses and draw a conclusion about which system benefits the horse’s welfare most. The aspects studied were for example, behavior, movement activity and injuries. In the Nordic countries, 8% of the horses are kept alone 24hours/day, 47% are kept in groups 24hours/day and 45% are kept in groups part of the day. Oral stereotypes were shown to decrease with increased time spent on pasture. Other stereotypes can be reduced with increased social contact with other horses, increased feeding time and group housing. Outside group housing reduced the nervousness of horses, but no differences were found between horses in single housing and pair housing indoors. Young horses on pasture habituated faster to the groundwork than the individual stabled hor-ses. Movement activity was studied in different systems where active stable resulted in high movement activity while individual box housing resulted in low movement activity. Excretion of stress-related hormones did not differ between horses in different housing systems, except for the corticosterone levels in the faeces, where lower concentrations were found in horses in the group housing system. No differences in pH in the horses stomachs in diffe-rent housing systems were found. Studies showed that group housing caused a risk of injuries in horses, but the majority of the injuries were minor and did not require any veterinary care. Pasture together with conspecifics seems to be most beneficial for the horse’s welfare because it provides increased fee-ding time, high movement activity and social contact.
