Abstract

Overweight in cats is a big and growing problem. It is estimated that up to two in five cats are overweight in the western world. Overweight in cats can be caused by genetic predispositions, and also by many factors connected to the housing of the cat. The impact of the pet owner on the body condition of the cat has been shown to be a crucial factor. Many owners do not se that their own cat is overweight, and many are also unaware of the risks associated with this overweight. The veterinary nurse has an important role in enlightening the owner the ideal body condition of their cat, and the clinical problems that the excessive weight can cause if it is not corrected.
A literature study was conducted in the purpose of investigating the negative consequences the overweight can have on the cat, what factors may cause this overweight and how the veterinary nurse preferably should communicate concerning overweight in cats with the owner. The literature agreed on that there are a number of clinical problems associated with overweight in cats. Because the overweight is reducible, and since many of these clinical conditions would be eased or even cured if the overweight is reduced and the cat was at its ideal weight, the overweight cats suffer in vane. The studies also agreed on several underlying factors that predisposes the cat to being overweight, and the veterinary nurse should be aware of these so that the warning signs can be detected in time to prevent the weight gain. The pet owner also proved to play a big part in the overweight because of the tendency to under-estimate the cat’s body condition. The veterinary nurse should therefor try to reach out to the owner and cooperate with them in the hopes that mutual action will reduce the weight of the cat.
In addition to the literature study an internet-based survey was also conducted. The purpose of this survey was to investigate how common communication between veterinary nurses and pet owners currently was. The survey was targeted to veterinary nurses working in veterinary practices across Sweden. In the survey the 41 responding veterinary nurses expressed to what extent they considered themselves to communicate with the owners concerning overweight when the cat visits for a vaccination or for the sake of lameness. They also graded the impact different factors may have on whether they talk about the overweight with the pet owner or not. The result of the survey showed that the major factor limiting the veterinary nurses to talk to the owner about the overweight was shortage of time. The result of the survey also showed that the majority of the respondents stated that they always mentioned or discussed the cats overweight during the visit. This is considered to be positive results if this was to be valid for most veterinary nurses in Sweden.
