Abstract

This bachelor thesis deals with questions regarding designing aspects of the landscape architect´s profession: the aesthetic practice. Its theoretical basis is the design philosophy of 'aesthetics of thrift', as presented by Catherine Dee in the book To Design Landscape: Art, Nature & Utility. The thesis discusses aesthetics, form and materiality, and landscape architecture as a form-based craft. It tries to highlight the concept of 'aesthetics of thrift' in relation to landscape architecture by discussing 'art', 'utility' and 'thrift', including ecological sustainability. The thesis also talks about some of Dee´s design strategies and principles for working towards an 'aesthetics of thrift', and tries to abstract the most important cornerstones of the philosophy in a model.
The second part of the thesis shows my own design process in Gästisparken in Vellinge, a town in the region of Skåne, Sweden. The process is shown mainly through sketches and diary notes, but also includes photographs and concluding thoughts about what is experienced in the park. The conclusions of the design choices are presented in two plans.
In the third part of the thesis I reflect upon my own design process, its challenges and choices, in relation to the theory, mainly the philosophy of 'aesthetics of thrift'. Following this is a discussion about how the concept of 'aesthetics of thrift' might be useful in the aesthetic practice of the landscape architect.
