Abstract

With a great interest in planning and mobility in mind the aim of this thesis has been to investigate what our future transport systems could look like and how these can take part in shaping our cities. Today´s rapidly developing technology continuously presents us with new innovations that are epected to lower emissions, increase traffic safety and optimize our car use. One thing we have encountered more frequently during the time span of this thesis, a thing that gets more and more media coverage, is the driverless car. What is often the source of discussions is its alleged ability to create safe traffic Environments, better traffic flow and more environmentally friendly mobility. What we found interest in was rather how this driverless car will affect the city regarding space and social aspects. What really got us hooked on the subject was a study showing that the driverless car allegedly could free up 9 out of 10 parking lots in the city. As landscape architects we saw great potential in the vast areas that could be made available - something that becomes interesting in relation to today´s great migration to cities and the lack of space that follows. Space made available in this context would greatly impact the city and the people living in it - economically, socially, ecologically, environmentally and Health wise.
this thesis includes a literature study, conversations with people with great knowledge on the study issues regarding densification and mobility in the city as well as a GIS analysis that makes it possible for us, with our newly obtained knowledge, to test found theories on a Swedish city, in this case, Malmo. These Three Components have lead us to interesting insights into the complex of problems, educative conclusions and rewarding discussions, all pointing to the incredible potential of the driverless technology when it comes to freeing space in the city. Full potential is rached when the driverless car is used in carpool systems that complement walkinf, cycling and public transport. Therefore the result also highlights the importance of carefully outlined laws, objectives and constraints on national, regional and municipal levels combined with skilled planning at various levels of society. All in order to lead the progress in a desired direction, where a sustainable transport system with fewer vehicles per person and cities with more qualitative spaces are some of the goals.
We hope that we, through this thesis, can draw attention to the great change that our transport systems now face while also showing the potential that the driverless technology actually could mean for our cities.
