Abstract

Play is one of the main activity areas for children. This essay describes what values playing holds and what the consequences might be when children are excluded from playgrounds due to deficiencies in the physical planning. The literature study shows that public rooms offer children with disabilities fewer opportunities to develop through play. The availability of playgrounds in Sweden is often deficient which leads to children with motion reductions and other disabilities not having the same possibility to be involved in play. The result might indicate that the municipalities do not prioritize accessibility. It could also indicate that physical planners do not have enough knowledge when it comes to designing playgrounds that are accessible to children with mobility- and other physical handicaps. The result could also be interpreted as planners not having sufficient communication with stakeholders, such as consultation with disability organizations. However, case studies and interviews with the architects of two playgrounds in central Uppsala indicate that there are many creative and innovative ways to create accessible play attractive to all children if planners possess playfulness, desire and knowledge.
