Abstract

This paper starts with a short presentation about the history of skateboarding. This presentation shows how skateboarders through time has occupied places in public space and how they through their activity engages with the city and the architecture in a way that few other groups do. But, as it shows, by doing so the skateboarders often come into conflict with other groups in the public realm. To get a better understanding of these conflicts and by which mechanisms in the public space these conflicts derive from, the main issues of the paper becomes to examine theories about public space, to look at specific cases where skateboarders have been excluded from public space and to look at the city of Malmö, a city where the municipality work actively to support skateboarding in the city. By doing this I will try to answer questions about which different outlooks and theories there is about public space, how these theories are applied on groups such as skateboarders and finally how these theories are related to how the city of Malmö work with skateboarding and if it is possible to apply the way they work on other groups and activities in the public space. All of this is done through a study of literature on subjects as public space and exclusion and also through an interview with the skateboarding coordinator at the municipality of Malmö. In conclusion the paper shows that there are different theories about what public space is, how it should be used and why groups get excluded from it. It also shows that some of these theories can be applied to explain why skateboarders come into conflicts with other groups and what leads to that skateboarders sometimes gets excluded from their use of public spaces. Some of the theories about public space can also be used to explain why the city of Malmö supports skateboarding in the city and how some of their interventions affects public spaces in the city.
