Abstract

Legumes are an interesting crop in agriculture since they have the capability of fixing their own nitrogen, which has environmental benefits by reducing the need to apply nitrogen fertilizers I In Sweden, only two percent of the total arable land is used for cultivation of grain legumes (such as faba bean and pea). A more intensive cultivation of legumes might increase the risk of multiple crop rotation diseases. Aphanomyces euteiches is one of those pathogens that can have severe effects on peas. Studies from Minnesota, USA shows that oat has a reducing effect on Aphanomyces euteiches thanks to its saponins. Oat saponins are called avenacin and it creates an antifungal effect. The purpose of this study was to test if oats can reduce Aphanomyces euteiches by intercropping. The method was an observational study of a green house experiment, consisting of intercropping oat & pea versus only pea. To evaluate the potential disease-reducing capacity of oats in different conditions, two series were performed with soil which was known to have different disease pressure (disease severity index; DSI). One of the series had a lower input value (DSI 10-20) and the other had a higher input value (DSI 30-50). Each series consisted of two treatments, each with five pots where peas were grown either alone or together with oats. To quantify the attacks of Aphanomyces euteiches, the DSI of the pea plants was graded after four weeks cultivation. Results of the observation showed no significant differences between the treatments. However, the results of this study do not need to reject previous findings, since factors influence the final result. The Oat variety is not confirmed to contain avenacin, and it is possible that the higher plant density in intercropping pots affected the result. Based on existing knowledge about crop rotation diseases, it should be possible to make a big increase in cultivation of legumes in Sweden.
