Abstract

Swedish domesticated chickens were mentioned in literature as having a great diversification as early as the beginning of the 19th Century. In the 1980s the Swedish association for local poultry (Svenska Lanthönsklubben) was established to protect the remnants of flocks of chickens which had their roots in the old traditional breeds. The different flocks have their origins in various parts of the country. Today there are 11 local Swedish breeds of chickens. There is a great diversification of size and appearance between the Swedish traditional breeds, from the Öländsk dvärghöna weighing 500g to the Skånsk blommehöna where cocks can weigh up to 3.5kg. Some of the breeds have a small variation in colouring, but others exhibit a great variation of both colour and markings. Even combs, legs feathers, crests and feather structure are very varied. There are a few studies of local Swedish breeds of chickens which compare the genetic diversity between the breeds or how much they differ from other breeds of chickens. In this study mtDNA from nine of the local Swedish chicken breeds have been sequenced and compared with each other and also compared against certain other breeds. The genetic variation between the local Swedish chicken breeds is small but it shows there are fifteen segregated positions which give a total of six different haplotypes. The Skånsk blommehöna is the breed which has the largest variation with four different haplotypes of mtDNA. The Kindahöna and the Åsbohöna having two haplotypes each and the Ölandshöna differs the most from the other breeds with a haplotype of its own. The study shows that the genetic variation of the local Swedish breeds of chicken follows the variation found in other European chickens.
