Abstract

The choice of bedding material has a significant impact on the welfare of the horse as it affects the air quality in the stable, the lying behaviour of the horse and possibilities to perform feeding behaviour. The bedding material also affects the manure management regarding storage, volume and compostability of horse manure. From the horse welfare point of view several studies have shown that straw is preferred as it provides possibilities to perform feeding behaviour and promote lying behaviour of the horse. However, straw may have a negative impact on the stable air quality regarding formation of airborne particles and gases. Like straw, peat can contain higher counts of microorganisms than other bedding materials such as wood shavings. From a manure management perspective, the choice of bedding material will be influenced by the farm's storage space as well as the compostability of the bedding material. Compared to most bedding materials, straw requires more space during storage. Peat has been found to have a high compostability and is an attractive fertilizer compared to if sawdust or wood shavings are used. The compostability of straw is poorer compared to sawdust and peat. The disadvantage with peat is that it gives a dark impression inside the stable, unlike sawdust and straw which provide a bright impression.
