Abstract

köldkänsliga lamantinerna under vintrarna.

The West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) is the most endangered marine mammal of
North America. It is one of three species of manatee, also known as sea cow. The West Indian
manatee is divided into two subspecies, the Florida manatee (T. manatus latirostris) and the
Antillean manatee (T. manatus manatus). The Florida manatee lives along the southeastern
coast, rivers and estuaries of the USA but Florida is their main site. The Antillean manatee
can be found between Bahamas, across the Greater Antilles and down to the northeastern
parts of Brazil. The West Indian manatee is now internationally listed as a vulnerable species
by IUCN and both subspecies are listed as endangered. It does not have any natural enemies,
it is seldom exposed to diseases and it can live for more than 60 years. In spite of this, the
population is small. The biggest cause of this is human impact affecting the population
negatively, both directly and indirectly. The number of Florida manatees has increased in the
last decade and, as a result, their national status as an endangered species in the USA is being
taken under consideration and might be changed to vulnerable. A change of status will not
change the laws and measures that are used today to help the population increase.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the problems this species is facing, why the
population number has decreased, what is necessary for it to increase again and, most of all,
how humans affect the manatees. The present study takes both subspecies under consideration
but is more directed at the Florida manatee.
In conclusion, the biggest threat to the West Indian manatee population is human impact,
especially poaching, fishing, the use of watercrafts and changes in their habitats. These threats
are slightly different for the two subspecies. Human interaction is not a direct threat to the
manatees but can still cause problems for the affected individuals as it can induce a negative
change of the animal’s behavior. The biggest threat to the Florida manatee is the use of
watercrafts, since a big part of the recorded deaths is caused by collisions with them. When it
comes to the Antillean manatee, the biggest threat is not watercraft collisions but
entanglement in fishing nets which leads to drowning. The increase in population is a good
sign but there is still a lot to be done before the species is viable again. A new threat the
Florida manatees might be facing soon is the possible closing of power plants and other
industries, because they provide warm water for the very cold sensitive manatees to use
during the colder winters. At the same time the tourism business is increasing and with it
comes an increased risk for improper interactions between humans and manatees. Watercraft
collisions is a big problem and a lot of work is being done to avoid and decrease them, like
applying speed limitations and areas where humans are not allowed.
