Abstract

In this graduate work, I wanted to find out what constitutes a good schoolyard according to previous
research and literature, and that from this knowledge, evaluating the schoolyard design proposals
that I myself helped design. The focus has been on the child's experiences and a children's perspective.
For our future schoolyards to be designed with the child in the center, it is important to understand
that children and adults perceive their environment in different ways and that the child and play is
given place in the process and in the physical environment. The literature reviewed shows that for
children it is important to interact with their environment and they mainly focuses on details that
they link to emotional and social aspects, another important part of children´s experience of their
environment is to find their own places, testing the limits of what a place or object is and to see
what you can do there. The physical and social space also creates the conditions for play that is children's
way of experiencing the world and a way for them to understand and cope with their environment.
In order to create a good schoolyard the conditions given for different kinds of play as imaginative
play, motion play, organized games and active and calm play is needed. This requires a
measure of the quality and variety as well as space but also that the location is not too organized
and over-designed. Important is that the children can make the place their own and that it is possible
to influence and change it.
The design proposal evaluated in the work puts the child in focus and gives them the opportunity to
influence their schoolyard with an emphasis on nature's role in this, further weight are added to
play, education and the surroundings. The proposal makes it possible for varied play and the opportunity
for children to influence their schoolyard, but much depends on the school and the care manager's
willingness to organize and include the children which is difficult to assess when the design
proposal is only at the conceptual stage, and not materialized. Since I helped design the proposal it
was also some difficulty in evaluating it objectively because I still had the good intentions of the
design in good memory.
