Abstract

Driving damages on forest soils during logging are something that the forest industry is working hard to reduce. One way to do this has traditionally been to manually classify the ground condition, surface texture and slope (usually called the GYL-classification in Sweden). The five graded scale for ground conditions weigh together soil type, soil moisture etc. to describe the bearing capacity of the soil. For some time, soil moisture maps also have been introduced to the forestry sector. These are made from the new terrain model, derived from airborne laser scanning and can give detailed information of the soil moisture. That is however only one of the factors that determine the bearing capacity of the soil, since e.g. soil texture also is an important aspect. This study will test if soil moisture maps’ relationship to the bearing capacity can be improved if they are combined with soil texture maps.
In the field, information about soil texture, soil moisture class, and ditches was gathered at 350 different points. The points were spread out over clear cuts, made by the forestry owner association Södra in their operation areas Växjö and Vimmerby. From the gathered information was then the bearing capacity classified at each point. The soil texture map and soil moisture map was classified to correspond to the values from the field inventory and paired together with the field inventoried data. The classification of the soil texture map was done manually and for the soil moisture map it was done with k-Nearest Neighbour (k-NN ). The soil moisture map was then paired together with the soil texture map to give a classification of the soil bearing capacity. The soil moisture map was also classified with k-NN to correspond directly to the soil bearing capacity. These classifications were then compared with each other and the field inventoried values.
In areas where the soil texture map have the scale of 1:50 000, which is about 58 % of Södra’s area, is the soil bearing classification improved if the soil texture map is included. The overall accuracy of the classification goes from 35 %, if only the soil moisture map is used to 63 % if the soil moisture and soil texture maps are combined. The overall accuracy in areas where the soil texture map have the scale of 1:100 000 is reduced from 42 % to 33 % if the soil texture map is included. The reason for that is the inability of the soil texture map to find small peat areas in the coarser scale. The only information that is gathered from the soil texture map is if the ground is peat or mineral. For more detailed information is the soil texture map regarded as to imprecise. The study does conclude that the soil moisture maps’ relationship to the soil bearing capacity could be improved if information about peat land areas are added to the maps, at least in areas where the soil texture maps have the scale of 1:50 000.
