Abstract

Couch grass (Elytrigia repens (L.) Desv. ex Nevski) is a perennial weed which is ubiquitous in Swedish arable lands. Before chemical treatment with glyphosate, couch grass was a common problem which was controlled with intensive tillage,
which is both costly and can increase the risk of nutrient leaching. Today, the problem with couch grass is most severe in organic farming and reduced-tillage systems, but
could still be considered a problem in conventional systems, since glyphosate is needed to control it. This thesis is a part of a project with the aim to develop organic systems which are not as dependent of tillage for the control of couch grass as present organic systems. We are evaluating four factors for couch grass regulation: the competitiveness of companion crops, mowing, vertical cutting before the sowing of crops and vertical cutting after three mowings. Vertical cutting is a technique where a tractor-driven device is pushing metallic discs about one decimeter into the soil with the purpose of cutting the underground plant parts, i.e. couch grass rhizomes. The experimental plan was designed with a total of 32 combinations of the factors repeated in four blocks. Italian ryegrass reduced the total nitrogen content in the shoots of couch grass, but not the couch grass shoot biomass. Vertical cutting before sowing, vertical
cutting after mowing three times and mowing reduced the rhizome biomass by 44,33 and 70 % respectively. The effect of mowing was enhanced by both treatments of vertical cutting but the enhancement was greater with early cutting. This could be an effect of the higher number of mowings after the early than the late vertical cutting. The reduction of rhizome biomass was similar between the different cutting treatments. This could indicate that the vertical cutting can be an option for mechanical treatment in a growing crop. The companion crops aboveground biomasses were not affected negatively by the cutting treatment. A growth test was used as a measure of
vitality of the rhizomes. The test showed few significant differences but the early cutting affected the shooting capacity negatively and decreased the dry weight of the
new shoots. The mowing treatment was effective in reducing couch grass but with ten repeats as in the experiment it is too costly and labor intensive to implement practically.
The most interesting result from this trial was that the vertical cutting can be performed in growing crop with almost as good control against couch grass as the
vertical cutting before sowing. Italian ryegrass as a sole crop as well as the grassclover-mixture can compete with couch grass in terms of nitrogen uptake.
