Abstract

Animals are transported today over the world for different reasons. The shipment usually takes place by truck which can affect animal welfare. It is important that the animals are in good condition before the shipment date since the transportation is a major stress for the animals. The animals are subjected to both physical and mental stresses such as noise, high humidity, high temperature, etc. An important parameter to increase the chances of a good transport is that the carrier has proper training and handling the animals well. It is also important that the transport is well organized with resting places for the animals or if an emergency should arise.

A major reason for impaired animal welfare during transport is vibration in transit. It is therefore important that the carrier is driving in a careful and orderly manner and drive on good roads. The journey time is clearly connected with the welfare of animals and studies show that when the shipment is over six hours it increases cortisol levels and heart rate of the animals indicating that the animals are stressed. There are many actors in the transport but it is the carrier who has primary responsibility for the animals when they step on the journey. It is also he/she who determines whether the animal is in enough good condition to be transported, not the animal owner. Since loading and unloading are the times that animals perceive as most stressful, it is important that it runs smoothly with experienced and trained staff.

The aim of this work was to lift up the deficiencies that may affect the welfare and demonstrate solutions for the carrier in order to prevent these. During the autumn of 2012 a transportation project in Sweden was performed, where all county boards was involved to increase control of animal transport. Results from Östergötlands County shows that many shipments do not meet the requirements imposed by animal welfare legislation. 58 transportations were checked, and 59 percent was recognized with one or more deficiencies. It was transportation primarily for horse and cattle that were checked. The most common deficiencies were lack of thermometer and fire extinguishers, which can affect animal welfare considerably. Even if fire extinguishers rarely need to be used, it is an invaluable tool if fire occurs. Without thermometer the risk of stress, because of heat or cold, increases which greatly reduced animal welfare. It was also noted that many carriers had insufficient documentation in the transportation vehicles. It is believed to be due to lack of knowledge or that the regulatory framework is too advanced and the driver does not feel they have time to devote to produce various documents.

Many animal transports on the roads in Östergötland County fail to maintain the minimum approved level of animal welfare law. If the carriers acquire aids such as fire extinguishers, thermometer and arrange correct documentation, many animal welfare deficiencies would be corrected.
