Abstract

In recent years there have been reports, books and films dealing with the common
international environmental problems that we face. From these environmental
problems, the concept of sustainable development has evolved. Sweden is also facing
several common problems; the increasingly complex environmental issues, the
expected population growth and urbanization that can lead to further reduction in
activity in rural areas and reduced food availability. This work examines the
alternative food production of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and how it
can promote the sustainable development of urban and rural areas in Sweden.
According to the concept "Triple Bottom Line" (TBL), there are three aspects to
evaluate; economic, environmental and social. These are the basis for both national
and international political decisions and sustainability goals.
This work consists of two parts, the first part is a literature review on the historical
background of sustainability, explinations of concepts within sustainability and
information about CSA. The second part is a quantitative questionnaire study of CSAparticipants
on Stackvallen and their opinions. The literature shows that CSA
activities can promote the sustainable development of society as they contribute to
increased economic stimulus and food security in an environmentally friendly
manner. In rural areas, CSA activities contribute to attractive living environments,
which promotes rural development. The questionnaire shows that the participants
valued the social aspects low, while the environmental and health aspects are valued higher.
