Abstract

Streets are key public spaces and vibrant streets are important from a social sustainability point of view. Sources claim that time is a vital ingredient in order for such streets to develop though today the time aspect is seldom conciously included in street design. That may be why many such projects fail in the long term. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if and how a longer temporal dimension can be used to design successful vibrant streets. A model street was studied and related to literature, which led to a design approach that was tested in a street development proposal, aiming to achieve vibrance. Time proved a problematic aspect in the design process. Partly because it means predicting the future and partly because the Swedish planning system today is not suitable for long incremental processes. Main conclusions are that a more gradual development process would be beneficial for vibrance, and should be aimed at, despite the difficulties working with time means.
