Abstract

This paper examines what place wildlife management has in a landscape planning context, and tries to find out what possibilities the landscape architect has to promote biodiversity and good conditions for wildlife. By reviewing and problematizing the concept of wildlife management, I attempt to get an overview of the terms meaning. I then investigate how some of the Swedish authorities work with wildlife preservation. Through interviews with employees of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Swedish Forest Agency and the County Administrative Board, I try to determine which role the landscape architect has in that work. The study suggests that the landscape architect where present in the work of wildlife management in the past, but no longer seems to be present in the field today. There is a need for overview and multidisciplinary expertise in wildlife management efforts and the authorities imply a desire to broaden their skills. This opens up opportunities for landscape architects to once again participate in the work of landscape design, with focus on wildlife management. The results of this study indicate that something has changed. What that is, is up for discussion.
