Abstract

Setra Rolfs Sawing & Planing Mill is a company that has existed for 100 years. Historically,
the mill has had a vision to decompose the log with as high volume yield as possible and its
primary goal has been to supply its own processing unit with wood. The result of this is a
processing unit offering a wide range of products in order to take advantage of all dimensions
and qualities that have been produced.
In later years, the competition in the planed wood industry has become increasingly fierce.
Companies in the industry have therefore been forced to streamline their manufacturing and
many companies have decided to specialize in producing only a small number of products.
Therefore, Setra Rolfs Sawing & Planing Mill has decided to investigate which products they
should focus on. As a part of this investigation a reliable spreadsheet has become
indispensable to develop. The spreadsheet may be used as a basis for selecting which products
to produce and serves as a tool for performance monitoring of the production orders.
The problem with making a product calculation model in the industry for wooden products is
that the materials that are used are heterogeneous, both in terms of wood’s intrinsic
characteristics and in this case also its dimensions. This means that the results can vary for a
manufacturing order, depending on the feedstock used. Another challenge is that one single
commodity generates a variety of end products.
Using ABC calculation is advantageous as it can be adapted to the operation that is to be
analyzed. The challenges mentioned above regarding heterogeneous raw material have been
handled in the model by allowing the user to fill in up to four different types of commodity for
each manufacturing order. In this way it is possible to see how different commodity types
affect the manufacturing order. The challenge regarding the divergent processes was solved by
treating the production order as a calculation object.
This report has been written to document the development and usage of the calculation model.
It also deals with the development of the situation-specific activity-based costing used, and the
results of the orders produced at planer 2 and 3 and band saw 2, between March 23rd and April 23rd 2015.
The results for the period have been very good despite large variations in income from various
products. A few of the products have been tested with negative results, however all products
exhibited positive contribution margin.
