Abstract

Plaque and calculus is the most common disorder in dogs. Studies have shown that the most effective way to prevent plaque and calculus formation is by tooth brushing. Unfortunately, the compliance of this is low and many pet owners refrain from brushing, even though they have received instructions on how they should proceed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether and to what extent food choice affects the formation of plaque and calculus in dogs.
The study shows that feeding dry food results in a reduction of plaque and calculus compared to feeding wet food, but not all dry food are effective against tartar. Commercial dry food pellets usually have a structure that allows the kibble to fall apart when the dog's teeth penetrate the kibble. There are specially formulated dental diets appropriate to discourage plaque formation and calculus. Dental food can be manufactured in different ways to improve oral health. This can be made by the food content, texture and size.
Several studies have been made on the effect of dental chews on reducing plaque formation. Both dental food and dental chews have been found to give equivalent results, and almost give better result than brushing. This because of tooth brushing depends on the owner's knowledge and brushing techniques, as well as the dog's acceptance to brushing. The study also notes that the feeding of "natural" diet for dogs does not provide any better oral health, but rather create more problems by an increased risk of tooth fractures.
