Abstract

Inga biverkningar tillstötte under behandlingstiden.

This retrospective study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a solution consisting of nitric acid, copper nitrate, zinc nitrate and binding agent (Oxalic®) in the treatment equine aural plaques. The study also aims to compare and discuss this novel treatment option in relation to the only treatment previously described in the literature, a 5 % imiquimod cream (Aldara®). Medical records from eight horses clinically diagnosed with and treated for aural plaques at UDS Hästkliniken, Uppsala and at Täby Hästklinik between 2011 and 2013, were the basis for data collection. The owners of all eight horses had sought care at the specialist dermatology department because their horse showed signs of discomfort/irritation as a symptom of aural plaques. The horses presented with ear and head shyness causing related problems in the everyday handling of the horse. The treatments were followed up via phone calls with the horse owners 12 to 28 months after the final treatment. The studied solution showed to be very effective; all horses were free of lesions after 1 – 3 treatments. One horse showed relapse of lesions at follow up. No side effects were observed during the treatment. No statistically significant differences in treatment success were noticed between the two treatment protocols when compared, but the evaluated solution (Oxalic®) gave significantly fewer side effects than Aldara®. This suggests that the novel treatment can serve as a good option in the treatment of aural plaques, being effective, simple and safe. However, more extensive studies are needed in order to further evaluate the effectiveness of the solution.
