Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a common disease in dogs that mainly affects middle-aged to older dogs. The development of the disease expresses in insulin deficiency or insulin resistance and the symptoms may be severe with ketoacidosis but most common are increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss and sometimes results in lifelong insulin treatment. The report covers diestrus diabetes, gestation diabetes and type 1 diabetes. Diabetes is also common in humans, the report covers the types similar to the diseases developed in dogs, type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes. Diestrus diabetes is common in older intact bitches and occurs more often in Sweden than in many other countries because of the low percentage of castration performed. The prevalence of diabetes with females varies between breeds and in certain breeds which develop diabetes, it is almost only females affected. Gestation diabetes is uncommon in dogs and there are only a few studies on this. Type 1 diabetes in humans is an autoimmune disease, but it does not appear to be so with dogs. Further studies are required to identify if autoimmune diabetes can affect dogs. The treatments with dogs are different from each other but the most common measure is castration in intact bitches. More research is required to improve treatment forms for diabetic dogs.
