Abstract

The ecosystem service approach has the potential to facilitate the communication between land users when different interests are in conflict, through emphasizing the different values of the landscape. However, few studies have included a quantitative or qualitative assessment of ecosystem services at the landscape level. This thesis focuses on land use and ecosystem services in a landscape perspective, using the Vilhelmina Model Forest (VMF) as study area. The overarching landscape planning issue in the VMF is how to combine reindeer husbandry with other land-use interests, mainly forestry. The aim of the study was to make a quantitative evaluation of land-use interests and ecosystem services. The data used is compiled from a land use mapping using 500x500 m grid cells. Generalized Additive Model (GAM) was used for modelling the impact of geographical parameters on the probability to find ecosystem services. The spatial pattern of grid cells with 5 – 6 land-use interests (hotspots) was analysed using Ripley´s K function. The result shows that hotspots for land-use interests constituted a minor part of the grid cells (1.8 %) and that these cells were aggregated in the landscape. Hotspots for ecosystem services, on the other hand, covered the major part of the landscape (82 %). The number of land-use interests and ecosystem services in a cell showed a weak positive correlation. The probality to find ecosystem services was generally high, but for the majority of the ecosystem services, the probability decreased in the alpine areas. Till, peat and water were the land cover types with the largest impact on the probability to find ecosystem services. This method has a great potential for studies of land use and ecosystem services. However, there is a need to develop and complement the model before it will be applicable in landscape planning and decision making.
