Abstract

In a society that is more and more coming to its’ senses and seeing the importance of controlling the human impact on her environment, green transport is a huge part in creating the sustainable city. The bicycle as a mode of transportation is an important part in the sustainable city not only to create a physic and mental health with its’ citizens but also as a means to higher living standards through less air pollution, less noise pollution, greater social inclusion and more work opportunities (WHO, 2014). An investment in the cycle infrastructure is not only a lifesaver through improved health but also through greater security and safety for the cyclist.
This papers purpose is to conclude and descried today’s methods to create a well-functioning and efficient cycle infrastructure. The question asked is: What are today’s methods for planning an efficient and user-friendly cycle infrastructure? The result is five criteria that are necessary for the cycle infrastructure to fulfill if the bicycle is to be successful as tomorrow’s mode of transport.
The criteria, directness, safety, attractivity, coherence and comfort, are originated from the Netherland in one of their earliest policy on how to handle the bicycle as a mode of transportation. Through numerous different sources these criteria are defined and shown through innovative clever or just downright smart solutions.
The paper is concluded with my own reflection on the problems surrounding these five criteria.
