Abstract

In this bachelor thesis I attempt to answer the question of how the municipal playgrounds are used in a
mid-sized Swedish town, and which factors affect the frequency of use. The main part of the essay is a
presentation of a case study conducted in 2010, which constitutes of an inventory of 27 playgrounds,
owned and managed by the municipality of Köping, in Västmanland, Sweden.
The premise of this thesis is the supposition that the public playgrounds are a valuble resource that in
many instances is not made full use of, and that this is the result of the lack of awareness, on behalf of
the planners, of what children require and ask for in their environment.
With the conclusions of the case study I contribute with data that can be compared to previous studies
of childrens playground use. In this way I seek to expand the general knowledge about user needs and
demands that can be drawn upon when planning for and designing new playgrounds. By evaluating the
results of the inventory and the methods I used, I want to present an example to help guide others who
wish to undertake a similar task, whether for an academic or a practical purpose.
The methods used to gather information for the essay were, in addition to the case study, litterature
studies about the importance of outdoor play for the development of children and about what a good
playground should offer. The case study makes use of questionaires directed to school children and to
the parents of preschoolers, as well as inplace inventories and evaluations of the playgrounds.
Most of the children in the case study visited playgrounds and had a playground close to their home,
within a 5 minute walking distance. Closeness to the home turned out to be the most important factor
in deciding which playground to go to and how frequently it was visited. The second most important
factor was that the playground equipment consisted of many things, unusual things (for the sake of
variation), and ”fun” things. The playgrounds visited by the largest number of users were the largest
and most well equipped playgrounds, but the bulk of the users did not visit them very often. Other
aspects found to be significant for playground use was that the play equipment was adapted to the
childrens age and developmental level, that it provided plenty of space and open surfaces for play, that
the environment surrounding it was seen as appealing and that you could meet other children there.
The questionaire survey as a main method offered a relatively good overview of which playgrounds
were most visited and showed the significance of closeness compared to playground content. Both the
school children and the parents proved to be valuable as informants. The method of using
questionaires with school children was deemed to be useful and to supply fairly good results. They
should however, preferably be combined with supplementary methods of a more quantitative nature in
order to gain a more in depth understanding of how children use the different features of playgrounds
and of the specific local conditions.
The playground provision in Köping seemed to be somewhat representive of small and mid-sized
Swedish towns. It had, with a few exceptions, relatively similar playgrounds, in regards to both size
and content, and the content was mainly made up of traditional prefabricated play equipment. Previous
research has pointed out that so called traditional playgrounds mostly support repetitive motoric play
and rarely the sort of experimentative, exploring and creative play that is crucial for a childs
development. The litterature also showed that to find out if a playground is a stimulating play
environment you can judge the existence and quality of these important features: plenty of space and
also small, partly enclosed spaces, different types of ground surfaces, vegetation for use in play
activities and to make the area more pleasant, sufficiently challenging solid features that offer
opportunity for some amount of risky play, loose materials that can be manipulatet by the child, it can
be a social meetingplace and finally, that the overall design works as a well functioning whole - a playscape.
