Abstract

“Blandstad” (the compact city or the mixed city) is nowadays a well-used term in the Swedish planning discourse, too well used could be said for a term without an
established definition. The use is understandable,“blandstad” is a term that gives mostly positive associations. There seems to be two separate ways of speaking about “blandstad”; as a utopian vision and as a realistic goal. The lack of a common meaning however, leads to an uncertainty concerning the meaning of ”the mix”
which has consequences in the realization of the city plans. This essay seeks to sort out the meanings of “blandstad” in Swedish urban planning, by who the term is used and in what contexts.

The essay is based on a literature study and is focusing on the Swedish term “blandstad”, literature in English and other languages has therefore been excluded. Eight aspects of the term, named closeness, time, functions, buildings, streets, greenery and spatiality, forms eight sections under which other literature, results and discussions are inserted.

The literature study has shown that “blandstad” often is explained as the opposite of the modernistic city, with separation of functions as the pervasive method.
Functional integration is therefore an obvious method in creating “blandstad”, but the two terms functional integration and “blandstad” should not be equated. “Blandstad” is commonly including a bigger, more general view on the city environment; its form, functions and contents. Safety, affinity, variation, diversity and complexity are central terms in the quest towards “blandstad”.

Both in the use of the term “blandstad” as a vision and as a reality it should be seen as a process or an approach, not as a final goal. But the overall use of the term can be
questioned, it is advocated by some that a more specific vocabulary for each area where “blandstad” is the aim. Such a use is said to give a more distinct view on what
is wanted with the mix.
