Abstract

A new type of cinerary urn, Urna Bios (in English called the Bios Urn), has been designed by the Spanish company Estudimoline. The basic idea is that a seed of a tree is placed inside the urn and starts to grow after the interment. The tree will then grow up on the grave. In order for this method to be used in Swedish cemeteries, the most important requirements of the urn have to be summarily investigated and handled and the goal of the bachelor essay is to do this. The thesis aims to provide a broad overview of how the Bios Urn should be managed in order to make plans for this burial method. The question that the thesis is based on is: "A burial with the Bios Urn entails many aspects to take into consideration. What are the primary ones and how they can be handled in order for the method to be used?" The analytical methods used to answer this question is a literature study, a survey about the interest in the urn and a quantitative interpretation of the answers, as well as a reflection on how a reality-based design example is dealing with the conditions of the Bios Urn. It can be concluded that the Bios Urn requires planning from a greater perspective of time than other types of burial. Furthermore, very skilled personnel in the cemetery management are needed to ensure the development of the grave tree. If the aspects of the urn are being considered and managed properly, the Bios Urn can probably be used as a burial method. However, the method most likely demands a considerable amount of money, knowledge and time and should therefore be further investigated. Using a tree plant instead of a seed may be an option that makes the Bios Urn more manageable.
