Abstract

The thesis’ idea was to find out what the traceability of seedlings looked like in the practical forestry, which effects it has on the costs associated with the regeneration phase and if increased traceability could improve the quality of the follow-ups. We examined which information was available in the different steps of the seedling production chain and what the flow of information looked like. In today’s forestry the big forest companies want to create forests that generate the highest revenue possible. The refined seedlings are one step in the attempt to reach this goal. To be able to evaluate if the refined seedlings produces any gain we believed it would be important to be able to trace which seedlings or seedling batches. The results showed that a considerable amount of information was lost in the seedling production chain and some data about the seedlings, which have a big impact on their quality, never was registered at all. It was not possible to trace a specific seedling batch to a specific young stand, but with some changed routines it would be able to accomplish this. If the batch number the seedlings were given at the nursery was registered in the stand’s register, most of the information about the seedlings would be available when you arrive in the young stand. To make it easier to evaluate planting results and the seedling refinery we think it is important to introduce a common system for data storage and the information in it to be searchable for every party of the seedling production chain.
