Abstract

Bordeaux.

The focus of this study report is the conceptual description
of a green framework – the usage of vegetation as a
structuring tool in a development process. The description
is partly studied through projects in Bordeaux, France,
where green framework were used to provide structures to
new development areas. The study is made by site visits in
Bordeaux, interviews with the landscape architect Michel
Desvigne and his literature on the subject as well as municipal
documents from Bordeaux.
The use of a green framework in Bordeaux was highly
debated which is illustrated in the report by a description
of the development and the approache to urban planning
strategies in a post-industrial context in Bordeuax.
I interpret the possibilities of a green framework by studying
urban planning strategies in Malmö. The bases for
these studies are municipal policy documents and interviews
with officials within the municipality of Malmö.
These shows the difficulties with green framework such as
flexibel pre-plantation and emotional aspects -citizens connection
to vegetation. In addition to that I present a theoretical
background that illustrates the changing approaches
to the green public space and its function within planning
and urban design in general.
The theories range from a contemporary discussion of
green infrastructure, green public space, the concept of
city v/s nature, Landscape urbanism to post-war values on
the subject and Olmsted historical projects in the 1800s. I
finally make my own free implementation of a green framework
in an area of Malmö harbour. The implementation
is done with the experience from the project in Bordeaux
as well as the knowledge of the context of Malmö and the
unique requirements of Malmö port as it is built on landfill.
My solutions and green framework differs from the
ones in Bordeaux and are closely linked to the symbolic
values of Malmö Port.

My design is based on the port’s historical and contemporary
significance. The basis of the port – the land fill and
its informal green structure as ruderal vegetation has inspired
the composition but also aspects such as uncertainty
in development process, flexibility and long development
process has led to my version of green framework.
