Abstract

Despite that the cat´s popularity has grown in the past years, the cat owner doesn´t visit the veterinarian in the same extent as the dog owner. Some of the reasons for this are that the owner feels that it is difficult to get the cat into the carrier, that the transport to the clinic and the visit stresses the cat, and that the staff at the clinic does not understand cats.

To educate pet owners and staff how to best avoid stress in the feline patient is important for the cat´s welfare and care but also for the safety of the owner and staff.
Stress in cats can turn into fear or stress-related aggression. In many cases, aggression is mistaken for dominance and you may try to rebuke or punish the cat, which usually aggravates the cat´s fear and stress.

To understand the cat´s way of reacting to different stimuli, one must understand how the cat perceives it´s environment through their senses and how it communicates, for example, that the cat is sensitive to loud noises or how it uses its body posture to show its state of mind.
Stress gives physiological changes that can affect both the clinical examination and the physiological parameters and this in turn can lead to misdiagnosis.

Client education, adapted design of the clinic and clinic cages and the knowledge of cat behavior and cat friendly techniques may reduce the stress in many feline patients.
