Abstract

There are people today who do not dare to go out in fear of not finding a bench along the promenade. This is harmful to both health and quality of life which is why it should be regarded as an important point in order to make the city more accessible. Every person benefits from an accessible city, but above all, it is indi-viduals with motional disabilities, many of which is elderly, who have the greatest need for increased ease of use. As this group suffers from both physical and mental ill-health in disproportionally high levels, there can be many earnings by enabling access to the public space by providing more benches to the cityscape. The purpose of this paper is to examine the availability of benches in Uppsala. The area Sala backe inhabits many people over the age of 65 and therefore should have great need of good accessibility, which is why it was chosen for this survey. How many benches are there in Sala backe? How far is it between them? Do they meet the accessibility requirements? Where and how great is the need for supplements in order to meet the published guidelines? The method consists of an inventory of the availability and accessibility of benches along the pedestrian walkways in Sala backe and an analysis of the distances between the benches that were found. The resulting map shows where the available benches are located and which benches have both arm- and backrest and are reachable for the physically disabled. The map also shows the sidewalks and walking lanes that has access to a bench within 100 m inside residential areas and 25 m in local centers. The walkways which lack benches within these accessibility zones are marked as areas where benches should be added in order to comply with the accessibility criteria used. Of a total of 75 benches, 61 seats are accessibly located, but only 35 of all inventoried units have both arm- and backrest. Both Brantingstorget and Källparken have plenty of benches with satisfying accessibility, but along the streets there are too few benches at regular intervals in order for public health not to suffer.
