Abstract

Environmental developments on Swedish golf courses is continuously improving, much of this depends upon stricter directives from EU and the government in relation to environmental concerns in reducing the use of Agrochemicals. Golf courses are important for the economy; golf courses give employment, increases biodiversity and improve people's physical wellbeing amongst other things.
In order to improve and develop golf course maintenance, education is of the utmost importance. Education has altered radically from the1980's till present day. Education for the maintenance of golf courses started in the middle of the 1980's and continued to develop through to the 1990's. From the millennium has universities and further education colleges started to teach golf course maintenance.

For long time golf courses have being publicly considered environmental bad guys and this opinion has grown stronger through the 1980's and 90's. Golf courses used increasing amounts of Agrochemicals during this period, this was a contributing factor that the public associated golf courses to be damaging the environment, hence bad guys. While researching articles one read that golf courses could be environmental badguys, or on the other hand could be good guys, because golf courses helped increase biodiversity and different species of animals could establish on the golf courses. It has being very interesting to research how golf course maintenance has developed over the years until presently.

Through the use of interviews one has compiled an understanding how changes has undergone in golf course maintenance from the 1980's until present day. One gets an understanding of present day practices and what shall probably happen in the future of golf course maintenance. The development of golf course machinery has being researched and if environmental certification of golf courses is sufficient or does it need more.

The results of the study highlighted two interesting things which could be continued to be studied and developed. Studies have shown that a broader range of approved pesticides can be a solution to control diseases by using the correct pesticide against a specific disease and thus reducing the risk of pesticide resistance in diseases. The other obvious finding is to continue the development of education by becoming more comprehensive and longer.
