Abstract

landskapsarkitekter behövs i branschen.

The implementation of IT has long been discussed as a solution to problems in the construction industry caused by the great upheaval that the industry has undergone in the twentieth century. The belief that IT should solve problems in high-cost, low-quality, poorly functioning information
exchange, etc. is strong. IT has so far been used to improve the individual operator's work but the
industry has recently started to actively apply IT to improve the construction process as a whole and
the cooperation between the actors in the industry. BIM is a technical system that manages information and that visualize information for it to be more easily understood by all parties involved in a construction project. VDC or “virtual construction” is a system for implementing BIM
throughout the building process. These IT-based tools implies a change of working individually and an altered cooperation in the construction process. Some believe that this will change the construction industry at large.
The architects in Sweden are unhappy with the role of the architect in the building process. Some argue that the industry is controlled by operators who only want to make money and do not care about the values in the built environment that the architect cares about. But many advocates of virtual construction think that IT-based practices can enhance the architect's role in the construction process. If these methods can strengthen the role of the architect, how then does the architect relate
to this new technology? What role can virtual construction play for architects to communicate with other players? Which route should the architect prefer for the industry to take regarding new technologies? And how can landscape architects use virtual construction to strengthen their
professional work?

Answers to these questions were sought in literature and by making field visits and interviews. The literature review made it posible to understand the development in the industry. The study of the historical background lead to and understanding of how the role of the architect has changed. These studies made it possible to understand the role today. This led to an analysis of the choices that the
industry is facing and how they may affect the role of the architect.

The interviews and visits provided a deeper understanding of what can be read between the lines in the literature that the interview questions were based upon. The visits helped to quickly gain an insight into practical application, creating a more reality based view on the subject.

These studies showed that the industry is in the process of applying virtual construction and it is within the civil construction side that the development is most rapid, and where the benefits are greatest. Major infrastructure projects are acting pilot projects, but attempts to apply BIM in smaller projects have been made. Virtual construction is not applied throughout the entire construction process, therefore making profits today are limited and the companies who are committed to
implementing the technology and working methods must accept less profit initially. Virtual construction involves a more advanced and time consuming planning. More information will be created initially. But the value of the information can be high in later stages, for example maintenence. The extra cost is also compensated for by fewer errors occurring during the construction process. For the landscape architect, this might mean that you can charge more for
what you produce and more landscape architects might be needed in the industry. This assumes, however, that landscape architects embrace the technology and not hand over this to the engineers.

The landscape architect should have no major obstacles in adjusting their individual way of working by moving to working with 3D in construction planing. If the landscape architect starts to do the construction planning in an object- and 3D-based way, then the landscape architect will stand ready to implement IT at the same pace as the industry in general. The technique is not fully developed
and right now there is an acceptance for working with a trial and error based approach.

But landscape architects must take responsibility for exploiting the opportunities that exist and to
communicate the importance of these to the rest of the industry and especially to developers who preferably could take greater responsibility for the whole building process. If the landscape architects does not take advantage of these opportunities, then the opportunity to strengthen their role in the industry can be missed.
