Abstract

In the discussion of the future sustainable cities, the visions of the mixed city often are in focus. The mixed city is characterized by mixed functions, where proximity to work, leisure, commerce and public places are the key qualities. Here you can not just work or live, but also experience a rich street life and events in the city. The vision of the mixed city seeks to create districts with a breadth and diversity, but the mixed city is not only a mixture of functions, it may also involve a mixture of different types of people. In this bachelor thesis I have focused on those parts of the mixed city that affect the social diversity, based on housing and public spaces. With the planning and design of residential environments and public space, landscape architect affect how people use and enjoy the environment, but it may also affect which people who will use the site. With this in mind, I have tried to study how landscape architects and planners can work to contribute to the social diversity that is part of the mixed city. The mixed housing can be counted as part of the mixed city. With a literature review, I have studied the history of the mixed housing and the tools available to try to create a social mix in neighborhoods. Norra Sorgenfri has in this case acted as a modern example of how the visions of the mixed city are used in the planning of an urban development project. I have chosen to study Norra Sorgenfri because Malmö city here has a great ambition to try to create a new part of the inner city with focus on a mixed city structure. I have made a documentary study of the municipal planning documents for the area and from these I have examined the ambitions Malmö city had with the area, the planning of the area's public spaces and how they worked to create mixed housing.
