Abstract

Sociotope mapping has been used as a metod in the two largest cities in Sweden since the beginning of 2000, Stockholm and Göteborg. The sociotope map in Göteborg is about to be completed during the summer of 2013 and will cover the entire city. I have a part in the finalisation due to a summer internship at the park and nature office in Göteborg. The purpose of this paper is to collect knowledge about the sociotope map and for the paper to be a reference in further investigations of the method.

In this paper I have chosen to deepen my knowledge about the emergence of the sociotope map by doing a literature study. This study has been conducted with the outdoor environment of the city as a starting point, regarding the role of the city planner, city planning ideals and the map as a tool. The role of the city planner has changed and can today be described as a facilitator of other people´s views in order to make good planning decisions. In this paper, the spreading of the functionalist ideas in city planning is discussed, as well as the criticism that later arose, rejecting functionalist and modernist design of public spaces. The city planning ideals of today promote the compact city, where conflicts are bound to occur. The role of the map is described in this paper as a tool for visualising information. The sociotope map arose as a way to create an understanding of values that otherwise are hard to describe and reason about in city planning.

A comparing study has been performed of Stockholm and Göteborgs undertaking with the sociotope map, and it shows that it differs in some parts and is similar in others. The difference can be noticed in the execution, who´s in charge of the maps and how the maps are designed. There are also similarities, for example in how the maps are used for city planning in both cities. They are also used as a knowledge collection in both Stockholm and Göteborg. The sociotope map acts as a base of analysis of social values, these analyses are then used as a basis for green planning documents.

The conclusion discusses what has been examined and answers the opening questions about the sociotope map. Disadvantages and advantages with regards to the sociotope map is summarised and then it is concluded that a sociotope map gets different results based on who´s making the map, and I question if that necessarily is a bad thing. Finally the metod used in this paper is evaluated and suggestions are given considering further studies.
