Abstract

There is currently an ongoing discussion about global climate change. One manifestation of this is in the objectives of the EU, through their technology platform for forest industries and their Strategic Research Agenda and the corresponding Swedish National Research Agenda. Both of which are documents that highlight the need to work for the development of innovative renewable materials in order to be able to replace old finite materials.

This report aims to highlight the factors that affect the ability to successfully innovate in the field of new wood-based renewable materials in the forest industries. The main focus is put on the processes from idea to a commercial product. The study was conducted as a case study of the innovation efforts of the renewable material that is commercially known as DuraPulp and owned by the forest company Södra. In short, the material is a cellulose-based pulp with an admixture of a bio plastic material which gives it good durability and means that the material is renewable.

The innovation process for this material has undergone several stages where it was first developed by the research company Innventia in their laboratory, as part of a joint project of several Swedish forest companies. Different types of demonstrators have later been created which has helped the material to be developed further. The material has in 2012 been put into commercial production, 10 years after the initial idea was discussed. The underlying technology for Durapulp is jointly owned by the participating companies of the joint Innventia research project, but they have chosen different types of applications to commercialize the findings of Innventia.

The study was conducted using qualitative data collection through semi-structured interviews of the involved parties, mainly persons that during some period were highly involved in the innovation process. The results section is presented in a narrative and descriptive way for the reader to be able to understand how the innovation process has progressed. The report also contains a separate analytic part where the results are linked to the theoretical concepts of innovation dispersion, and its implications are further discussed in the discussion chapter.

An opinion which emerged from a respondent in the study was that it could be advantageous to offer micro loans to inventors and entrepreneurs in order to enable them to develop prototypes, conduct tests, or patent their innovations. A different view that was discussed by several respondents was that the organizations should strive for interdisciplinarity in their projects for the purpose of utilizing as much expertise as possible.

The study's main conclusion is that making contacts, and being open about and sharing information is essential for the innovation process. Important for an innovation project is thus, what in the theory is called, gatekeepers, which is people who like to share their contact network and ensures that the right contacts can be linked together. At the point when you have found the right contacts and brought them together, it is a good idea to let them work together in an autonomous project team to best utilize their skills and experience.
