Abstract

This thesis aims to re-include the issues of social uses and aesthetic values in the debate around, and the planning and construction process of, hydropower-plant-building. It is argued that our environment matters to our physical and psychological well-being and by making active industrial areas integrated parts of our communities, a new type of exciting platforms will be created, where learning about and understanding industrial functions play a central role, while other new and unrelated activities also are given room so that the industrial area becomes a multifunctional and inviting space instead of a single-purposed excluding one. Transparency and participation are key words.
Since the modernist era, industrial environments have grown very separate from the cities or communities that use and neighbour them. Through separation of functions the new industrial areas do their best to keep people, both physically and visually, out. In hydropower plants and their close environments this manifests itself in both the buildings and the landscape. The buildings have become excluding, fewer and smaller windows together with remote or pulled back locations, fencing and obvious barriers keep people at bay, while the work with the surrounding landscape more often than not is limited to dealing with ecological issues.
Through study of the history of industry and hydropower-plant-building in Sweden, together with the vernacular landscape’s influence on our well-being and precedents dealing with socialization of industrial, infrastructural or technological sites or data, a knowledge-base is created and a set of design-tools acquired. These are then applied by the creation of a tool for social usability of a site where different kinds of use are refined and defined and together with their suitability on different sites, depending on the sites rudimental conditions and setting, a sliding gradient, which ranges from singular visual usages to social hubs where many different uses are integrated, is formed. The knowledge-base, the design-tools and the social-uses-tool are then applied to create designs for three actual hydropower-plant-sites all located in mid-Sweden, all owned by the power company Fortum and all close to or just through renovation/ rebuilding, but all three with fairly different prerequisites.
