Abstract

Today time is more valuable than ever. Therefore it is important to consider where to spend available time and how to make things more effective without investing.
The project is based on a time study accomplished at ten different farms containing 50-500 beef cattle. During the time study, an Excel-tool developed by the advice agency Taurus, was used to collect and compile data. To make the comparison of data easier, a limitation was made to only cover the production of beef cattle. The time study was supplemented with a literature study.
Each housing system’s advantages and drawbacks were further discussed and it was stated that the amount of time varies depending on the housing system and the work task. Bedding was the work task that differed most in time (0,006-0,183 min/animal and day) depending on the housing system at the farm. Systems with straw bedding need more time when it comes to bedding compared to systems with boxes and slatted floor. Feeding was the work task that represented most of the time, namely 31-80% of the total working hours at the different farms.
The conclusion that was made is that the farmers have good knowledge of their present production but are willing to develop it further to be able to improve the production. By studying what specific work tasks that are most time consuming on their farm, they can improve their work and be more efficient.
This study shows that there are large differences between the most and least efficient farmer. The potential of saving time is large if it is possible to identify where it’s been used. However, the will to be more efficient should not have a negative effect on the animal health and welfare or quality of the beef production.
By doing a time study at a farm, it is possible to see the distribution of time and what work tasks that takes a lot of time. Then it is easier to see where it is possible to increase the effectiveness at the farm.
The beef producers can share their time studies and compare results to their own production. Regardless what kind of housing systems they have, the farmers can use the results from this study.
There is hope for the future; we can see a beef production with high development potential. A production, where the farmers are in the lead, even compared to the rest of the world, hence that Sweden has one of the toughest animal welfare regulations in the world.
