Abstract

The majority of all collie owners in Sweden are satisfied with their dog and choice of breed and may well consider having another one. This was found in a survey that collie owners who owned a collie between the years 1999-2009 had the opportunity to fill in from May to December 2010. In the questionnaire there were three questions included where the owners could answer whether they were satisfied or not with their dog. These questions were:
* Do you think the temperament of your dog is well suited for your way of life and the goal you have with your dog?
* Would you be willing to get another dog in the future?
* If you were to get another dog, would you consider a rough collie?
When the answer to these three questions were compared with the dogs behavior, as described in the other questions in the survey, it seemed that it was mainly the fearfulness of the dog that differed between owners who were satisfied with their dogs and those who were not. The dominating causes of fear in the dogs whose owners answered no to the questions above were mainly non-social fears (such as fear of loud noises, fireworks or gunshots or fear of walking on strange surfaces), or/and that it took a long time for the dog to overcome a fear reaction.
When these fear reactions in the dog's living environment, described by the owner, were correlated with behavior described in a standardized protocol designed to assess behavior in dogs, MH, a positive correlation was found between the fears at home and the score the dog got at the test variable Gunshot on MH and a negative correlation was found between the factor Curiosity/Fearlessness. This means that MH can be used to identify dogs that are more likely to show fear also in the home environment, except for fear of floors and other surfaces which cannot be identified by the MH that is being used today.
Since the heritability for the behavior traits described in the MH is considered to be high enough to form the basis for an effective genetic evaluation for dog mentality, there are good possibilities to breed for less fearful collies and thereby achieve even more satisfied collie owners.
