Abstract

Captive animals get frustrated if they do not get the opportunity to partake in behaviors that they are strongly motivated for. To cope with the stress they experience they can develop abnormal repetitive behaviors, also known as stereotypic behaviors. Which stereotypic behavior that is developed depends on which behavioral need that is not being satisfied. Studies show that the animals performing stereotypic behavior often fare better than the animals that live in the same environment but don’t show any abnormal behaviors. It is therefore not the behavior as such that should be addressed but the cause behind it. The presence of stereotypic behavior is often used as an indicator for poor welfare.
Environmental enrichment stimulates and gives animals a wider range of behavioral opportunities and therefore promotes improved physiological and psychological well-being. The goal with environmental enrichment is to help animals cope with the stress and boredom that captivity brings.
Which environmental enrichment that is to be used is decided by the cost in both time and money. Even though structural enrichment is considered one of the most important environmental enrichments it is not one of the most often provided. The reasons why structural enrichment is not used more frequently in zoos are the high costs involved, the limited space of the enclosures and the increased manual labour needed for installment.
To date environmental enrichment has only had a partial success in decreasing stereotypic behavior in zoo animals. This suggests that the enrichment currently being used is either not optimal or that the enrichment is put into place to late and that the stereotypic behavior has already become a habit, resistant to change. It is important to meet as many of the behavioral needs of the animal as possible, preferably before the animal gets frustrated and develops stereotypes. The best thing for an animal is to give it access to all types of environmental enrichment and then to use rotation and alteration as to prevent habituation from developing.
The zoo world is an invaluable resource for behavioral research, but also a problematic one. Small animal groups, environmental variation and individuals influence on each other makes it difficult to achieve significant test results. Also the lack of time at the zoo staff’s disposal and a desire to quickly reduce stereotypic behavior rather than ascertain the underlying mechanisms hinders the research even further.
Building better multi international databases and conducting more meta-analyses would give zoo staff a clearer view of which enrichments are the most effective. This would help to make sure that the right environmental enrichment is used and would also help enrichments to be used pro-actively rather than reactively.
