Abstract

A riding instructor professional role is to educate riders and increase their knowledge of horsemanship. Usually, there are 6-12 students in a group, which places heavy demands on the riding instructor to get its message across. Each rider has their individual learning style and their own prior knowledge and skills. For each rider to develop requires that the riding instructor mastered a pedagogy that promotes the visual rider, the rider auditory and kinaesthetic and /or tactile rider. The purpose of this study is to document how the demonstrations in the jumping can be implemented with a clear theme and a well thought out progression and to evaluate students' views on teaching and shape educational value associated with the student's learning style. The study has two issues. Contributes demonstration lessons to pupils' knowledge? How does learning style lesson pedagogical value for students?

The students participating in the study are studying the second year at university, specializing in riding instructor. During the academic year 2010/2011, the students have participated in eleven practical demonstrations. The demonstrations have a predetermined sequence with the contents: "From beginning to end", "Seat training in longeline", "The rider's influence and hope the horse ground work", "Rhythm and approaching the fence", "Young horse training," "Free jumping", "Style Show Jumping," "The warm-up before show jumping ","Show jumping "," jump-off and turns "and" Trouble solution ".

Results: The collection consisted of a phenomenological study aims to describe what he/she has perceived and how the person relates to the perceived. The person who understands is considered as the knowledge the person has achieved. The students carried out before the first demonstration lesson and after the last demonstration lesson, a questionnaire with the question: How do you experience the following phenomena - definition and associations? "The rider's seat and balance," "Impact", "Approach" and "Show jumping". The student’s perception of the respective phenomena, have been estimated according to Bloom's taxonomy. It is based on six levels of how the person learns something new or difficult. The six levels allows the teacher to know at what level students have learned and make it clear how students will increase their knowledge

To identify people's most dominant learning style there is used a questionnaire of the Brain Books Style Questionnaire Adult ™ (StilenkätVuxen™), 2005. The answers give an idea of the person's learning style. In order to infer an affinity of learning style is often used a VAK test, which is a practical test in an individual case and specific time gives an indication of sensory dominance (Boston, 1998). VAK stands for; V= Pictures (Visual), A = Sound (Auditory), K = Emotions (kinaesthetic and /or tactile). The result of learning styles showed that seven people were visual, 13 people were auditory and 15 people kinaesthetic and /or tactile. Learning styles were both single and in combination with one or two styles. The most common combination was auditory, combined with kinaesthetic and /or tactile.

Those who have reached the highest level of knowledge are the auditory students. The visual students felt that the demonstration classes led to maximum educational value. In the “phenomenon before” at "seat and balance" has six people raised their level of knowledge in two stages. Changes in the perception of the phenomenon is most in “effect of influencing the horse” as between the “waist function and importance to have a correct and varied seat”. No student had achieved level 3 = "application" in "phenomenon before" but ten of the "phenomenon after".

The phenomenon "Effect of the rider's aids " increases the perception of the "phenomenon before" to "phenomenon after" most in the perception of the "effect of the rider's aids" to have the horse such as "in the frame" or "on the hind legs" and "up hill". Three people increased their knowledge in two stages. The phenomenon of "Approaching the fence” decreased perception of the importance of “tempo “, “rhythm and balance" and "the path to the fence”, and has been replaced by having a "good canter" and the “importance of long /short approaches to the fence”, “the character of the fence”, “combinations” and “distance”. The notion of being able to "adjust the riding to the fence by the horse" and "able to support in to the distance" and "the importance of a good seat and position" has increased. Only two people increase their knowledge level two steps. ”Approaching the fence” showed the highest level of knowledge in "phenomenon before" with six people who had reached the third level of “application” and in the "phenomenon after" eleven people.

In the phenomenon of "Show Jumping" there were only one person that had increased its knowledge in two stages. Total common experience of the phenomenon is that “show jumping” is “fences in a row in a particular order” and is a “competitive element to the daily basic work”. The view in "phenomenon after" shows the largest difference compared to the "phenomenon before" in the perception of a “track consists of various fences and types”, “distances”, “routes”, “approaches” and “nature of fences” with nine views of the "phenomenon after" the four perceptions of the "phenomenon before."

As an educational evaluation, the students also answer a questionnaire how they feel demonstration lessons have: led to greater understanding, leading to deeper knowledge and how they perceive the lesson pedagogical value. There were found that the demonstration lessons had led to a maximum estimate of the educational value mostly to the visual, then the auditory and the at last the kinaesthetic.

In conclusion, it can be seen that even if the lesson structure is mainly designed to promote the visual, the result shows primarily to promote the auditory, followed by the visual and last the kinaesthetic. Since auditory combined with kinaesthetic is the most common type of learning style to become, these people still indirectly benefit from the demonstration lessons. Previous studies show that students usually prefer riding instructor that demonstrates the exercise before trying (Axelsson, 2008) and most of the pupils want to try themselves and at the same time be taught (Berglund, 2000). Since most students have more than one learning style, which means that the most effective way to teach what the student think is new or difficult, is trying to use more learning styles in their teaching. The study shows that demonstrations classes in jumping are a great educational value and leads to greater knowledge and deeper understanding but varies between the different learning styles.
