Abstract

Residential yards can serve as a place where the residents can come together and establish social bands, which may contribute to a safer neighborhood. People use their residential yard in different ways and to varying degrees, which affects their demands and expectations of the yard. For many people the yard is primarily appreciated as a nice view from the window or as a place they pass, while others use the yard more actively. But the residential yard has the possibility to become a valuable part of people’s home environment. This essay, which consists of literature studies, is intended to identify the qualities and functions that make the yard appreciated by its residents. This can be helpful for those planning and developing residential yards.
How well the residential yard functions has partly to do with the physical aspects, including the size, the boundaries, and the accessibility for the residents. The physical conditions may determine whether the residents will consider the yard as “theirs”. But the usage of the residential yard is also affected by the social climate and the residents' feelings of security. There is not one single solution to what the residential yard should look like, but there are some physical solutions that tend to work better, and others tending to work less good. The physical design can allow for activities and meetings, but in the end it is the residents who determine in what way the yard is used.
