Abstract

“Slinger” is a neurological defect found in the Gotland pony breed, which cause a lack of coordination of the muscle movements (ataxia) derived from an underdevelopment of the cerebellum. Similar cases of the defect have been found in Arabian horses under the appellation cerebellar abiotrophy (CA). The defect originates similarly to slinger through degeneration of the Purkinje cells in the cerebellum, causing symptoms of ataxia. A candidate gene for CA has recently been found in the Arabian horse breed, and a DNA-test based on it is now commercially available. In this literature review the two defects and their possible relationships will be compared to evaluate the possibility to eliminate slinger in the Gotland pony breed. There is a possibility that cerebellar abiotrophy could have been introduced into the Gotland pony breed through crossing with Arabian horses in the beginning of the 20th century and thereby given rise to the defect slinger. Through genotyping of Gotland ponies that are affected by or known carriers of the potential CA-mutation, possible relationships could be established between slinger in the Gotland pony and CA in Arabian horses. In the future, this new information could be used to eliminate the defect slinger thus improving the health of the Gotland pony breed.
