Abstract

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) occurs commonly in cats. The virus causes most of the time no symptoms at all or mild enteritis. In some individuals, the virus mutates and causes the fatal disease Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Most cats infected with FCoV carry the virus for weeks to months and then eliminate it. Some cats become persistent carriers and shedders. Since the virus is so widespread in the cat population, it is difficult to eliminate a multi-cat household from FCoV. Therefore, many breeders are worried about getting the virus in their breeding cattery and this can lead to that they avoid mating with cats from catteries which are not free from the virus. FCoV is also common in exotic feline species, which is a problem in our attempts to preserve endangered species. Spread of infection is predominantly fecal-oral, and many studies have examined the fecal shedding of virus. Few studies have been undertaken on the excretion via other body fluids.
In this study, 50 healthy male cats were sampled for analysis of antibodies to FCoV. Of these, 18 cats had antibodies, and from these cats, swabs were taken from the pharynx, conjunctiva and rectum and analyzed by RT-PCR to investigate the secretion of FCoV via these routes. Besides this, both semen and blood samples were taken for RT-PCR analysis. None of the cats were shedding virus in the pharynx, conjunctiva or semen and it was not possible to detect virus in the blood. Virus was excreted in the feces of 10 of the cats and none of the cats with antibody titers lower than 1:160 were shedding virus in feces. The cats did not excrete virus in semen and this means that artificial insemination could be useful in preventing the spread of infection between catteries.
