Abstract

***************** This paper is written in the light of firstly an ongoing worldwide urbanization, and secondly the fact that motorism today has become the subject of questions about sustainable recourses. For the purpose of giving increased understanding of why cities of today looks like they do, the breakthrough of motorism in Sweden is described, as well as the changes in the urban street scene, and thenceforth the pedestrian's experience of the modified street scene is described in the consequence of motorism.

By means of relevant literature automobile's rather inconsiderate, and more or less unrestrainedly, way of taking place in the city is described. When a hierarchical system of traffic routes becomes norm, the roadways broaden, buildings are being torn down, and parts of the street scenes are being dissolved. Pedestrians and cyclists are being directed from the streets to separate foot roads and cycle paths. Thus, the result is increased availability for motorism as the expense of pedestrians and cyclists.

A case study of the Swedish street Nobelvägen in Malmö reviews – with the aid of literature, photographs and other documents – the impact that the breakthrough of motorism has had on the experience of the street scene, from the pedestrian's point of view. Among others the paper finds out that the increased amount of automobiles is giving rise to traffic noise, which causes stress, constrains talk, and drowns sounds that other way could have contributed to a more positive experience. On the strength of theories of environmental psychology a premise is made regarding that the avenue which disappeared along Nobelvägen in the mid-'50s reduced the stress that pedestrians continuously are being exposed to.
